For those of you who aren’t yet aware of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), we’ll give you a quick overview. In short, the legislation was proposed to support Hollywood in protecting their intellectual property rights (which we wholeheartedly agree with), but would also allow the government to shut down entire websites left and right for allowing their users to share digital content. Website like Wikipedia, Facebook and Reddit would all likely be shutdown in a matter of days. Seems a little ridiculous, right? It is. In fact, Wikipedia and Reddit are both so disgusted in the legislation that they are going to “blackout” their websites Wednesday in order to send a message to the White House and Congress, and in an effort to gain support from the internet community.
